Grammar and Sentence Structure

  1. Sentence: 「捜索隊に危険が及ぶ可能性があったため、ハンターが発砲した。」

    Grammatical Points:

    • 及ぶ (およぶ): This verb means “to reach” or “to extend to.” In this context, it refers to the potential danger that could affect the search team.
    • 可能性 (かのうせい): This noun means “possibility” or “likelihood.” It indicates that there was a chance of danger.
    • ため: This conjunction indicates a reason or cause, translating to “because” or “for the purpose of.”

    Structure:

    • The sentence is structured as a cause-and-effect statement. The first part, “捜索隊に危険が及ぶ可能性があったため,” presents the reason (the possibility of danger to the search team), followed by the result, “ハンターが発砲した” (the hunter fired). The use of “ため” connects the two clauses logically.
  2. Sentence: 「周囲の地面や木には血痕のようなものもついていたという。」

    Grammatical Points:

    • 周囲 (しゅうい): This noun means “surroundings” or “vicinity.”
    • 血痕 (けっこん): This noun means “bloodstain.” The phrase “血痕のようなもの” translates to “something like a bloodstain.”
    • ついていた: This is the past continuous form of the verb “つく,” meaning “to stick” or “to be attached.” It indicates that the bloodstains were present at that time.
    • という: This phrase is used to indicate reported speech or to convey information. It can be translated as “it is said that” or “it was reported that.”

    Structure:

    • The sentence starts with “周囲の地面や木には,” which sets the context of the surroundings. The main clause “血痕のようなものもついていた” describes what was found in those surroundings. The use of “という” at the end indicates that this information is being reported, suggesting it may not be firsthand knowledge.
  3. Sentence: 「男性は国内外の山を登るが、『登山道でクマにあったのは初めて。襲ってくる様子はなかったが、緊張した』と話していた。」

    Grammatical Points:

    • 国内外 (こくないがい): This compound noun means “domestic and international,” referring to mountains both within Japan and abroad.
    • 登る (のぼる): This verb means “to climb” or “to ascend.”
    • 様子 (ようす): This noun means “appearance” or “state.” In this context, it refers to the behavior of the bear.
    • なかったが: This is the negative past form of the verb “ある,” meaning “there was not,” followed by “が,” which contrasts the previous statement.
    • 話していた: This is the past continuous form of “話す” (to talk), indicating that the man was speaking at that time.

    Structure:

    • The sentence begins with “男性は国内外の山を登るが,” which introduces the subject (the man) and his experience with climbing mountains. The following part, “『登山道でクマにあったのは初めて。襲ってくる様子はなかったが、緊張した』,” is a direct quote from the man, providing his personal experience and feelings about encountering a bear. The use of “が” contrasts the lack of aggressive behavior from the bear with the man’s feelings of tension.
