Grammar and Sentence Structure

  1. 「空港を管理する北海道エアポート(HAP)によると、紛失があったのは、危険物の持ち込みが制限されている搭乗待合室の中にある店舗。」

    • Grammatical Points:

      • 「によると」: This phrase means “according to” and is used to indicate the source of information.
      • 「あったのは」: This is a past tense form of the verb 「ある」 (to exist) combined with the explanatory particle 「の」. It indicates that the following clause provides an explanation or clarification about the subject.
      • 「制限されている」: This is the passive form of the verb 「制限する」 (to restrict), indicating that the action of restriction is being applied to the subject (dangerous items).
    • Structure:

      • The sentence begins with a subject phrase “空港を管理する北海道エアポート(HAP)” (Hokkaido Airport, which manages the airport), followed by “によると” (according to). The main clause “紛失があったのは” (the loss occurred) introduces the topic, which is then elaborated with “危険物の持ち込みが制限されている搭乗待合室の中にある店舗” (the store located inside the boarding waiting room where the carrying of dangerous items is restricted).
  2. 「この影響で午前10時半には出発便の離陸がストップ。」

    • Grammatical Points:

      • 「この影響で」: This phrase means “due to this influence” or “because of this impact,” indicating a causal relationship.
      • 「には」: This particle indicates a specific time or condition, emphasizing that the action occurs at that particular point.
      • 「ストップ」: This is a loanword from English (“stop”) used as a noun, indicating that the departure flights’ takeoff has been halted.
    • Structure:

      • The sentence starts with “この影響で” (due to this influence), establishing the cause. The main clause follows, stating “午前10時半には出発便の離陸がストップ” (at 10:30 AM, the takeoff of departure flights was stopped). The structure clearly links the cause and effect.
  3. 「はさみは本来、鎖などで固定することになっていた。」

    • Grammatical Points:

      • 「本来」: This adverb means “originally” or “by nature,” indicating the intended or expected state.
      • 「ことになっていた」: This phrase indicates that something was supposed to be the case or was established to be so. It combines the nominalizer 「こと」 with the auxiliary verb 「なる」 in the past tense.
      • 「固定する」: This is the verb meaning “to fix” or “to secure,” indicating the action that was expected to be taken.
    • Structure:

      • The sentence begins with the subject “はさみは” (the scissors), followed by “本来” (originally), which sets the context. The main clause “鎖などで固定することになっていた” (was supposed to be fixed with chains, etc.) explains the expected action regarding the scissors, indicating that there was a prior arrangement or rule concerning their security.
