Grammar and Sentence Structure

  1. Sentence: 「成田さんは横断性脊髄(せきずい)炎のため、中学生の頃から下半身が動かなくなった。」

    • Grammatical Points:

      • 「ため」 is used here to indicate a reason or cause, meaning “because of” or “due to.”
      • 「動かなくなった」 is the negative form of the verb 「動く」 (to move) in the past tense, indicating that the action of moving has ceased.
    • Structure:

      • The sentence starts with the subject 「成田さんは」 (Ms. Narita), followed by the reason for her condition, 「横断性脊髄炎のため」 (due to transverse myelitis). The main clause then states the result of this condition, 「中学生の頃から下半身が動かなくなった」 (has not been able to move her lower body since she was a middle school student).
  2. Sentence: 「その圧倒的な強さから「水の女王」と呼ばれた。」

    • Grammatical Points:

      • 「から」 indicates the source or reason for something, in this case, the reason she was called “the queen of water.”
      • 「呼ばれた」 is the passive form of the verb 「呼ぶ」 (to call), meaning “was called.”
    • Structure:

      • The sentence begins with the phrase 「その圧倒的な強さから」 (from that overwhelming strength), which sets up the context. The main clause follows, stating the result of this context: 「「水の女王」と呼ばれた」 (was called “the queen of water”).
  3. Sentence: 「競技外でも積極的に活動し、講演などを通じてバリアフリーの推進を訴えた。」

    • Grammatical Points:

      • 「でも」 is used to indicate “even” or “also,” emphasizing that her activities extended beyond just competition.
      • 「通じて」 means “through” or “by means of,” indicating the method by which she promoted barrier-free initiatives.
      • 「訴えた」 is the past tense of the verb 「訴える」 (to advocate or appeal), indicating that she actively promoted these initiatives.
    • Structure:

      • The sentence starts with the phrase 「競技外でも積極的に活動し」 (actively engaged in activities outside of competition), which describes her proactive involvement. The second part, 「講演などを通じてバリアフリーの推進を訴えた」 (advocated for the promotion of barrier-free initiatives through lectures, etc.), explains the specific activities she undertook to promote her cause.
